Short answer
Sometimes, but not often. Whether you can smoke is up to the charter operator and aircraft owner, within FAA rules, and most do not allow it because smoke damages cabins and bothers later passengers. Smoking is never allowed in the lavatory or when the crew says no. Cannabis is not allowed on any flight, because it is illegal under federal law, which governs aviation.
Unlike airlines, where smoking has been banned for decades, charter flights leave some room for the operator to decide. In practice, most charter aircraft are non-smoking, and smoking-permitted aircraft need to be requested in advance.
Who Decides
- The operator and the aircraft owner. Many owners forbid smoking to protect leather, carpet and air systems, and to keep the aircraft attractive to future clients.
- FAA rules. Smoking is never allowed in the lavatory, when the No Smoking sign is on, or when the crew says no.
- The crew. The captain has final authority on board.
- Airports and FBOs have their own rules on the ground.
Cigarettes, Cigars and Vaping
- Cigarettes are the most likely to be allowed on smoking-permitted aircraft.
- Cigars are the least likely, because the smell lasts.
- Vaping is usually treated like smoking. Vape devices and spare lithium batteries must stay in the cabin, never in checked baggage.
Cannabis
Cannabis is illegal under federal law, and federal law governs aviation. That applies to smoking, vaping and edibles, even between states where it is legal. Do not bring it on board.
How to Find a Smoking-Permitted Aircraft
