Short answer
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is one of the most demanding airports in the US. It sits at 7,820 feet in a narrow valley, is closed from 11 pm to 7 am, bans aircraft with wingspans over 95 feet and has no customs. Winter storms can close it, so every trip needs a backup such as Eagle County or Rifle, and the thin air limits how much weight a jet can carry. Book with operators whose crews fly Aspen regularly.
Aspen is one of the busiest private-jet destinations in the country, and one of the trickiest. The airport is 3 miles from downtown, which makes it wonderfully convenient when everything lines up. These are the things that make it different.
The Airport at a Glance
- Elevation: 7,820 feet
- Runway: one runway, about 8,000 feet
- Curfew: closed from 11 pm to 7 am
- Wingspan limit: 95 feet
- Customs: none; international flights clear customs at another US airport first

Terrain and Crews
Aspen sits in a narrow valley with mountains close on all sides, and the approach and departure procedures are demanding. We use operators whose crews fly Aspen regularly, and we confirm that both the aircraft and crew are approved for Aspen before you book.
Altitude and Weight
At 7,820 feet the air is thin, especially on warm summer afternoons. That reduces how much a jet can weigh on takeoff, which can mean less fuel, fewer bags or a fuel stop on long trips. For example, New York to Aspen is easy eastbound, but the return may need a larger jet to fly nonstop. See how far can a private jet fly.
Weather and Backup Airports
Winter storms can close Aspen for hours. Every trip we quote includes a backup:
- Eagle County (EGE), about 90 minutes by car, with a long runway for any business jet
- Rifle (RIL), about 75 minutes by car
We arrange ground transport if your flight diverts.
Holidays and Parking
Ramp space at Aspen is limited. At Christmas, New Year and Presidents’ Day it fills days in advance, and many aircraft drop passengers and reposition to Rifle or Grand Junction. Book early and confirm your return at the same time.
Summer in Aspen
Summer is busy too, with the Food & Wine Classic, music festival and conferences. Afternoon heat makes morning departures the easiest.
